Today we had a field trip to the National Zoo with our Roots and Shoots group. Every time we go into DC we always think, why don’t we do this more often? Today was such a great day! |
The first part of our day was spent at the “How do you Zoo” activity room for a planned learning experience. There were four activity centers each relating to a different zoo career. |
· Caden radios back to headquarters in the “Small Mammal House” which contains six activities that mirror tasks performed by animal keepers to maintain an exhibit |
· Malena is in the “Animal Hospital” which contains five activities that reflect veterinary tasks involved with maintaining the health of zoo animals |
Caden feeds the ‘crickets’ in the “Keeper’s Office” which had several activities focused on routine duties of animal keepers. |
LUNCH TIME!! |
We Joined! |
Time to look and see all the animals of the zoo! Here the kids are looking at the Cheetah, who was looking at the Zebra in the next pen...lunch time? This was our ‘free learning time’ And they had a great time! |
Caden poses with Tai Shan, the baby giant panda. He will be shipped back to China probably by the end of Fall, since all panda’s throughout the world are considered ‘on loan’ from China. Look for future postings as we study these amazing creatures this week! |
Family pose with Tai Shan |
The kids found this lady who let them touch a real Scimitar-horned Oryx skull. She talked to the kids about the horn structure, teeth, diet and habitat. It was cool for them to touch the horns, since they could only look at them from a distance. Caden’s favorite part was the teeth. So, as you can see, it was a nice day at the zoo. We didn’t get to stay as long as we would like, but we stayed about all we could because they were tired (although they’d never admit it!). |
Good friends make learning FUN! |
