Raccoon Rehabber
Text Box: You know, because I don’t think I have enough to do, with four kids, a huge dog, a man, three cats and two turtles...I have decided to get my license to be a wildlife rehabilitator. Today I met with Erika who will guide me on the process. I really wanted to do something that made a difference, and taught the kids about caring for animals and putting animals where they belong...in the wild. While it will take some time before we have any animals of our own to care for (check back at the end of April) we are all excited about this new prospect in our lives.
Text Box: These are the raccoons she has now. They were born in the fall, and will be released in the next month or so. The live outside in a large enclosure. They had lots of toys to play with, and who knew? They use a litter box!! The floors are vinyl so they can be easily cleaned. Inside are tree branches to climb on, and shelves up high since they like to sleep up off the ground. They are also nocturnal, so they were a little groggy when we were in there...but, a peanut butter cookie woke them right up!
Text Box: Erika has been doing this for 25 years. She has very nice cages. The metal tall ones below are in her basement, and she only acquired them recently. Clearly, at the start my cages may look more like the lower left hand side. I’d like to build structures like on the left off of the shed or playhouse. We are pretty excited to get started!
Text Box: This is her turtle pen. They are hibernating right now, but I love this little cage for them, and it has given me some ideas for Flower and Speckle (our two little box turtles).
