The National CathedralText Box: Home

On Friday, we went with some friends to the National Cathedral.  We wanted to see a crèche display that was only up through the weekend.  However, we saw and learned a lot more!  This was a place designed for all to worship.  It was built as a place to hold national prayers, public funerals, as well as to suit the daily needs of the people.

Cade liked touching all of the massive structures, and even took a moment to read the bible.  Yes, it is upside down.  Soon, we stumbled across the tomb of Woodrow Wilson.

We went during a nice time of day...early afternoon.  The light through the stained glass was just beautiful.  I became obsessed with taking pictures of the windows.  The lower left was my favorite.

This was a window that paid homage to the Apollo 11 mission.  Ya, that is what I said too.  Hard to believe the National Cathedral would have a window devoted to space men— but, it was pretty.  And, that little white circle contains actual moon rock!

After obsessing over the stain glass, I turned my attention to the alters.  They had so many different kinds!  They all represented a different theme.  Each of these rooms were called chapels. That simply means a room with an altar.  I feel certain my photos would be better with an slr digital camera.

Still with us kids?  Let’s go see the crèche’s!!

They had lovely little crèche’s from around the world.  Nepal, Haiti, Chili were all really lovely...but my favorite, okay, there were two—one was the Alaska one with the igloo in the background and the round little Eskimo type faces on the Jesus figures.  The second favorite was the one from Kenya because it was made from Coke cans.  While I have not been to Africa, my man has.  Every time I saw a picture from there, no matter how remote the area, no matter how poor the people—somewhere in the photo would be a can of Coke.  A L W A Y S!  So, I found that to be particularly funny.

These were the coolest ones we thought

Afterwards, we went outside.  Now, keep up...first, I was obsessed with stained glass, then altars, and I enjoyed the crèche exhibit immensely.  However, upon walking outside, well, even from the tower view I became obsessed with gargoyles.
